Road Trip: Phoenix

Phoenix

Friday - Day Eleven

The road trip had to come to and end, and it ended in Phoenix, arriving just before sunset. It was a brief stay for me, just a few hours before I jumped on a plane back to DC. I did return a few weeks later for the long July 4th weekend, so this is a mix of that visit too.

Almost without fail whenever you tell someone you’re going to Phoenix, especially in the summer you’re met with a look of surprise, and always why? Yes, the temperatures peaked at a balmy 108 degrees while I was there, but compared to DC’s high temps and humidity it wasn’t terrible, when you are outside it’s typically with a cold beer in hand under fans blowing mists of water. There are worse ways to spend it.

Road Trip: Roswell & White Sands

Roswell

Thursday - Day Ten

For our New Mexico stop we initially thought it would be El Paso or perhaps Albuquerque, depending on how north we’d be, a quick drive through to get us into Arizona. Not once did I imagine we’d end up in Roswell, but there we were with our tin hats. I was a big fan of The X-Files growing up, I think there’s still a box of VHS cassettes collecting dust in my parents attic, which I should probably eBay. We didn’t quite know what to expect, at the very least we could say we’d been, not quite a bucket list destination but not far off.

Wednesday - Day Nine

It took us about 12 hours over two days to get through Texas, we went from torrential rain approaching Houston to clear skies and scorching summer heat into the Hill Country and Plains. It’s obvious to say but Texas really is big, and it’s everything you expect it to be. I’ve been to Texas many times before but always to one of the major cities, except that one time I went horseback-riding at a dude ranch with a dozen bachelorettes, that happened once. To truly see Texas you just have to get in a car and drive across it.

Tuesday - Day Eight

From Nashville it was a non-stop drive to New Orleans, passing through Alabama and Mississippi. It wasn’t long after crossing the Louisiana state line that we knew we were in the deep south, in the north road-kill consists of deer and raccoons, in the south it’s alligators. A mix up with our hotel room provided us with a couple of drinks at the bar, it seemed like the best way to start off our evening before setting out for the French Quarter.
